The short version
- Watching is free, for everyone, with no account.
- Share links to the episodes and show them in classrooms as much as you like.
- Please don’t re-upload, sell or remix our films, or use them to train AI models.
- The folktales belong to the communities who told them; our films and artwork belong to LostLores.
- Every alternate ending is clearly marked as a “what if”. The story as it was told is always kept.
01 About these terms
These terms cover your use of The Stories We Were Told, run by LostLores, a VOME Studio company in Accra, Ghana. By using the site you agree to them. If you are under 18, please read them with a parent, guardian or teacher.
02 What you can do
- Watch every episode, play every ending and take every quiz, for free.
- Share links to the site and to episodes on social media, by message or by email.
- Show episodes in classrooms, libraries, community groups and family gatherings, as long as you don’t charge for entry.
- Quote short parts of the stories, with credit, for reviews, teaching and research.
03 What we ask you not to do
- Download, rip or re-upload our films, artwork or music to other sites or channels.
- Use our films, characters or artwork commercially, or in ads, without written permission.
- Use our films, images or text to train or fine-tune AI models, or scrape the site.
- Try to break, overload or get into parts of the site that aren’t meant for the public.
- Send stories, messages or anything else that is hateful, abusive or meant to mock a people or culture.
04 Who owns what
The folktales belong to the communities who have told them for generations. We don’t claim to own any traditional story, and we always credit the people and the version we drew from (Episode 1, for example, is a Konkomba tale in the Wajabuu Maakpork telling).
Our retellings are © LostLores. That includes the films, scripts, narration, music, the cut-paper artwork, our designs of the characters (including our Kweku Ananse) and the interactive endings. Kweku Ananse himself is a traditional figure who belongs to everyone; our particular design of him is ours.
LostLores Originals are new stories we created ourselves, and we own them outright: the stories, characters, worlds and films.
Donated stories stay yours. See the donation terms for what you allow us to do with them.
05 How the films are made
Every episode is written, directed and edited by our team. We use AI image and video tools to help animate it, guided by our own art direction and character designs, and we check every shot for cultural accuracy and respectful representation before it is released.
06 Alternate endings
Some episodes let you choose what a character does. Those choices lead to endings we invented, and we label them as such. Each episode always includes “the story as it was told”, so the traditional ending is never lost or replaced.
07 Keeping the site running
We work hard to keep the site available and the stories accurate, but we provide it as it is, and we can’t promise it will always be online or free of mistakes. We may add, change or retire episodes and features. If you spot a mistake in how we tell a story, we would like to hear about it: stories@lostlore.org.
08 Our responsibility
As far as the law allows, LostLores is not responsible for any indirect loss that comes from using the site. Nothing in these terms limits any right you have that the law says cannot be limited.
09 Links to other sites
If we link to another website, such as a source for a story, we aren’t responsible for what is on it, and its own terms and privacy policy apply.
10 Changes and the law that applies
We may update these terms; the date below shows when they last changed. These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Ghana. Questions go to stories@lostlore.org.
