The short version
- You can watch every story without an account, a sign-up or an email address.
- No ads, no advertising trackers, no analytics cookies. We don’t sell or rent anyone’s information.
- The only personal details we hold are the ones you type into the story donation form.
- Your email address is never shown publicly. Your name appears only if you ask us to credit you.
- You can ask us to see, correct or delete what we hold about you at any time.
01 Who we are
The Stories We Were Told is made by LostLores, a VOME Studio company based in Accra, Ghana. We decide how the information on this site is used, which makes us responsible for it under Ghana’s Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843).
Questions about privacy go to stories@lostlore.org.
02 What we collect
When you watch
Nothing that identifies you. Your browser remembers which endings you have found so it can show them on the endings shelf. That note stays on your device; it is never sent to us. Quiz answers are not saved anywhere.
When you donate a story
Your name, your email address, the name you’d like to be credited as, the story itself, its title, where it comes from, the language it was told in, who told it to you, and the three permission choices on the form.
When anyone visits
Like every website, our hosting provider handles technical information such as IP addresses and browser type to deliver pages and to keep the site safe from abuse. We use it only for security and to fix problems, and we don’t use it to build profiles of anyone.
When you write to us
Whatever you choose to put in your message, so we can reply.
03 Why we use it
- To consider, research and animate donated stories, and to contact you about yours. We do this because you asked us to, and you can withdraw that consent at any time.
- To credit you, in the story library and in a film’s credits, only if you tick the box asking for it.
- To keep the site secure and working: blocking spam, stopping attacks and fixing errors.
04 What becomes public
When we add a donated story to the library, the page shows its title, where it comes from, the language it was told in, its status, and your credit name if you chose to be credited. If you didn’t, it reads “A storyteller who asked to stay anonymous”.
Your email address, and the full text you sent us, are never published.
06 How long we keep it
- Donated stories we decide not to animate: deleted within 12 months of our decision.
- Stories in the library or in production: kept while they are in the library or being made.
- Credits on a released episode: kept as part of that film’s record. Your email address is deleted once we no longer need to contact you about it.
- Security logs: kept for the short period our hosting provider sets, then deleted automatically.
07 How we protect it
- The whole site runs over an encrypted connection (HTTPS).
- Donated stories are encrypted before they are stored, and only our small team can read them.
- Our story-review tools are protected by a private key, and the site limits repeated attempts.
- The donation form is protected against spam and automated abuse.
- Found a security problem? See reporting a security issue.
08 Children
These stories are made for families, and children can watch every one of them without giving us any information at all.
If you are under 18, please send a story together with a parent or guardian, using their name and email address. If we learn that a child has sent us personal details without an adult, we will delete them.
09 Your rights
You can ask us to:
- tell you what we hold about you and give you a copy;
- correct anything that is wrong;
- delete your details, or remove your name from the library;
- stop using your information, or withdraw your consent.
Write to stories@lostlore.org and we will reply within 30 days. If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, you can also complain to the Data Protection Commission of Ghana.
11 Changes to this page
If we change how we use information, we will update this page and the date below. If a change affects stories you have already sent, we will email you first.
